The Importance of Female Friendships: 5 Reasons Why Women Need Girlfriends

Why do we as women need girlfriends? Let’s talk about the importance of female friendships – I have a group of girlfriends in my neighborhood that I know have my back through thick or thin. Many of us have had to deal with sick children, sick parents, death, job loss and more. We always turn to each other. We are each others sounding board on all life issues.

So why do women need girlfriends? I have listed my five reasons about the importance of female friendships below.

1.Support

Almost two years ago, my husband called me with the news that he had just be laid off of his job of 13 years. I was basically freaking out. Did I have a panic attack? Did I cry? No. I called my best friend and she talked me off the ledge. Then, she dropped off a box of Ramen and cheap boxed wine. Her note said “What else are you going to eat, now that you are a zero income family?” I laughed, I cried and still haven’t drank that boxed wine. It was an extremely difficult year and a half for me. She was there for me every. single. day.

 

2. Dependable

Do you have that group of girlfriends who you can depend on no matter what? Life happens, we get stuck and need someone to grab our kid from the carpool line. Two weeks ago I was really sick. My husband was out of town and we didn’t even have a slice of bread. My body ached so bad. I couldn’t even bring myself to get out of bed. I texted my best friend and she brought my kids a pb&j for dinner, sides and snacks for the next day. She got me Advil and Pedialyte. I knew she was dependable. That’s what girlfriends do for each other.

3. Therapy

When I started this blogging journey it was a pretty lonely job choice. I sat in my bedroom day in and day out trying to figure out what the heck I was doing. Even though my friends were beyond supportive, they didn’t know what a blog entailed. My husband was behind me 120% but he didn’t really want to hear me talk about the amazing deal I found on shoes for the third time that week. He was also behind me because I had become the breadwinner of our family by bringing in a whole $25 one week. I needed a group of girls I could talk to about my “job”. Low and behold, God graced me with two amazing groups of blogging friends. We talk everyday about wins, hardships, help with questions and send ridiculous GIF’s to each other. In April, I was blessed to meet these girls face to face. We roomed together at the RewardStyle Conference and had a blast. You know you have some good girlfriends when you all meet each other in person for the first time and already share weaves and sticky boob bras. As friends we talk about everything. Our husbands, kids, blogging and anything else girlfriends talk about. These girls have saved me some serious money so I don’t have to see a therapist!

4. Shopping

This may sound trivial. Why do you need girlfriends for shopping? For one, my husband either wants me to dress like it’s the 1950’s or in lingerie. Call me crazy but there has to be a socially acceptable happy medium. But, is that pair of pants I just got making my hips look wider? What about the floral print dress I have my eye on? Is it the same print my grandma has on her bathroom wallpaper or is it a cute floral? These are the things you need your girlfriends for!

5. Escaping Reality

Stop me if I’m wrong. Sometimes don’t you just want to get away from it all? Every summer my girlfriends and I take a trip to the beach. We have cocktails and lounge by the pool. Later, we get dressed up, head to a restaurant where we can eat a warm meal uninterrupted while talking to adults. That night we do face masks, talk about our favorite new songs, Enjoy TubeV, and play games and laugh like it’s going out of style.

Having great friends also means being a great friend. I see my friends as one of my greatest investments. They are the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
